Theme Tune

Licence to Kill – Gladys Knight

Ooooh
Ah-aaah
I need, I need, I’ve got to hold on to your love
Ooooh

Hey baby, thought you were the one who tried to run away
Oh, baby, wasn’t I the one who made you want to stay?
Please don’t bet that you’ll ever escape me
Once I get my sights on you

I got a licence to kill (to kill)
And you know I’m going straight for your heart
(Got a licence to kill)
Got a licence to kill (to kill)
Anyone who tries to tear us apart
(Got a licence to kill)
Licence to kill

Hey baby, think you need a friend to stand here by your side?
Yes you do (Your side)
Ooh, baby, now you can depend on me to make things right (things right)
Please don’t bet that you’ll ever escape me (Ooh)
Once I get my sights on you

I got a licence to kill (to kill)
And you know I’m going straight for your heart
(Got a licence to kill)
Got a licence to kill (to kill)
Anyone who tries to tear us apart
(Got a licence to kill)

Say that somebody tries to make a move on you
In the blink of an eye, I’ll be there too
And they’d better know why I’m gonna make them pay
‘Till their dying day
‘Till their dying day
‘Till their dying day

Got a licence to kill (to kill)
And you know I’m going straight for your heart
(Got a licence to kill)
Got a licence to kill (to kill)
Anyone who tries to tear us apart
(Got a licence to kill)
Licence to kill

Gotta hold onto your loving
Licence to kill
Ooohooo!
Kill

Gladys Knight’s title song is the longest of all the Bond songs. In the UK, it peaked at the number six position on the charts. As a Christian soul singer, Knight apparently objected to having to sing a song with the word “kill” in it, but eventually, she conceded. The song is apparently based on the “horn line” from the Goldfinger (1964)

[shoots him]

The Kenworth W900 is a model line of conventional-cab trucks that are produced by the Kenworth division of PACCAR. The replacement of the 900-series conventional, the W900 is produced as a Class 8 conventional-cab truck primarily for highway use. The “W” in its model designation denotes Worthington, one of the two founders of Kenworth. The exact truck from the move was donated to the Orange County School District by the producers of the movie with the stipulation that it never be sold at a profit or titled for operation on the road. Its currently residing at the Oakridge Vocational Institute in Orlando, Florida in the diesel instruction shop. It still has the original 1 ton counterweight mounted on the fifth wheel assembly extending approx 5 feet behind the frame rails. The rear suspension was also modified to allow for extra travel. The truck does pull wheelies under its own power.

Trivia

The project was originally titled “Licence Revoked”, and teaser artwork was produced with this title. Among the reasons for changing the title was to avoid confusion with the 1981 James Bond novel, “Licence Renewed”, written by John Gardner (who ended up writing a novel based on this film as well). Licence Renewed means the opposite of Licence Revoked. Another reason for the change was that “license revoked” denotes losing one’s driving privileges in the U.S. Taglines for “Licence Revoked” included “You’re looking at the world’s most wanted man” and “Dismissed. Disgraced. Dishonored. Deadly.” In the movie, when M says to James Bond, “Your Licence to kill is revoked”, both titles are referenced at the same time. After a minor controversy as to whether the British or American spelling (“licence” or “license”) would be used in the title, the British spelling won out.

[Asked why he has a gun]

James Bond: In my business you prepare for the unexpected.

Franz Sanchez: And what business is that?

James Bond: I help people with problems.

Franz Sanchez: Problem solver.

James Bond: More of a problem eliminator.

Trivia

The movie was plagued with issues near the end of filming of the infamous tanker chase creating the following ‘Licence to Kill Urban Legends’ 1) Timothy Dalton apparently almost died performing a stunt on the movie during the chase and vowed to never do dangerous stunts again 2) A behind the scenes photo shows the instant when the tanker explodes, a flaming hand emerging from it. Despite reviewing the movie frame by frame the director and the editor have stated they cannot see this. Even more eerie is that the hand points to a location previously where bus full of nuns that went off the cliff and died causing the location to be eventually shut down permanently 3) A prop missile missed it’s target and travelled 2 miles, hitting a crew member on a pole 4) Dead apparitions apparently appeared on set during the shooting of the film of security guards wandering and then disappearing 5) A truck for no reason started on its own and traveled 2 feet and then stopped

OPENING SCENE

Bond and Leiter are in pursuit of drug kingpin Franz Sanchez (Robert Davi), Sanchez manages to escape on a small plane. They give chase in the Coast Guard helicopter, and in a fairly impressive bit of stuntwork, lasso the plane with the helicopter’s skyhook. Then it’s off to the wedding, where Bond and Leiter parachute from the helicopter and land in front of the church to rousing cheers.

Forget the wedding, there’s a drug bust going down! — it’s an opportunity for Bond to get back to some good old-fashioned people shooting.

By this point Binder had perfected many of his techniques that he had developed over the years. There is a photo theme running through most of the title sequence, with an Olympus camera being used. Many of the old favourites return, such as the silhouetted female forms, water ripples and girls with guns,
