Theme Tune

Oh, Pretty Woman – Roy Orbison

Pretty woman, walking down the street
Pretty woman, the kind I like to meet
Pretty woman
I don’t believe you, you’re not the truth
No one could look as good as you

Mercy

Pretty woman, won’t you pardon me?
Pretty woman, I couldn’t help but see
Pretty woman
That you look lovely as can be
Are you lonely just like me?

Wow

Pretty woman, stop a while
Pretty woman, talk a while
Pretty woman, give your smile to me
Pretty woman, yeah, yeah, yeah
Pretty woman, look my way
Pretty woman, say you’ll stay with me

‘Cause I need you
I’ll treat you right
Come with me, baby
Be mine tonight

Pretty woman, don’t walk on by
Pretty woman, don’t make me cry
Pretty woman, don’t walk away, hey, okay
If that’s the way it must be, okay

I guess I’ll go on home, it’s late
There’ll be tomorrow night, but wait
What do I see?

Is she walking back to me?
Yeah, she’s walking back to me
Oh, oh, pretty woman

Trivia

Richard Gere and Julia Roberts had obvious chemistry upon their first meeting. However, Gere was not planning on taking the role. He was on the phone ready to turn down the part when Roberts slid him a Post-it note with the words “please say yes” written on it. He accepted the role right then.

The Lotus Esprit is a sports car that was built by Lotus in the United Kingdom between 1976 and 2004, as well as a future release in 2014. The silver Italdesign concept that eventually became the Esprit was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1972 as a concept car, and was a development of a stretched Lotus Europa chassis. It was among the first of designer Giorgetto Giugiaro’s polygonal ‘folded paper’ designs. Originally, the name Kiwi was proposed, but in keeping with the Lotus tradition of having all car model names start with the letter ‘E’, the name became Esprit.

This included Ferrari and Porsche, who had declined the product placement opportunity of the car Edward drove, because the manufacturers did not want to be associated with soliciting prostitutes.[4] Lotus Cars saw the placement value with such a major feature film. This company supplied a Silver 1989.5 Esprit SE (which was later sold). This gamble paid off as the sales of the Lotus Esprit tripled during 1990-91

Trivia

Originally intended to be a dark cautionary tale about class and prostitution in Los Angeles, this motion picture was reconceived as romantic comedy with a large budget. It was widely successful at the box office, and it became one of the highest money-makers of 1990.

Today it is one of the most financially successful entries in the romantic comedy genre, with an estimated gross income of $463.4 million. It is considered by many critics to be the most successful movie in the genre.

When Edward (Richard Gere) snaps the necklace case down on Vivian’s (Julia Roberts) fingers, was improvised by Gere, and Roberts’s reaction (laughter) was totally natural. The filmmakers liked it so much, they decided to leave it in.

Richard Gere is actually playing the piano. He also composed the piece of music that is played.

Julia Roberts’s head was superimposed on Shelley Michelle’s body for the poster. Richard Gere’s hair is brown on the poster, but graying in the movie.

Quote

Vivian: People put you down enough, you start to believe it.
Edward Lewis: I think you are a very bright, very special woman.
Vivian: The bad stuff is easier to believe. You ever notice that?

Vivian: You’re late.
Edward Lewis: You’re stunning.
Vivian: You’re forgiven.

[after negotiating three thousand dollars]
Vivian: I would have stayed for two thousand.
Edward Lewis: I would have paid four.

[At the beginning of the evening]
Vivian: In case I forget to tell you later, I had a really good time tonight.

[last lines]
Happy Man: Welcome to Hollywood! What’s your dream? Everybody comes here; this is Hollywood, land of dreams. Some dreams come true, some don’t; but keep on dreamin’ – this is Hollywood. Always time to dream, so keep on dreamin’.

Mr. Hollister: Just how obscene an amount of cash are we talking about here? Profane or really offensive?
Edward Lewis: Really offensive.
Mr. Hollister: I like him so much.
